Job Posting for Canon for Pastoral Care

Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, a spiritually vibrant parish located in downtown Columbia, South Carolina, is seeking an energetic and experienced priest to serve as Canon for Pastoral Care.

Trinity’s programs reach hundreds of people weekly in a parish with a baptized membership of 4,000. Participation extends across all age groups, from young adults and families with young children to senior citizens. This position will give special attention to the offering and coordinating of pastoral care, including overseeing a newly trained cadre of lay pastoral care givers.

This is a full-time position open to ordained candidates. Principal Focus.

  • Assess the needs of Trinity Cathedral’s pastoral care with a view to strategically visioning for the future.
  • Create resources relating to the parish’s pastoral needs.
  • As Canon Pastor/Canon for Pastoral Care, oversee lay and ordained pastoral response within the parish relating to births and deaths, along with visits to hospitals, nursing homes and the homebound.
  • Provide formation opportunities related to loss, grief, and end-of-life issues.
  • Perform shared clergy duties as outlined below.

 

Regular Duties.

  • Function liturgically on Sundays as assigned, including to preach, celebrate, baptize, as well as to conduct weekday services and seasonal services such as Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, etc.
  • Conduct baptismal preparation classes in rotation with other clergy.
  • Conduct hospital and home visits and provide communion.
  • Conduct burials and weddings.
  • Teach or lead Christian formation classes.
  • Participate in special events as required.
  • Attend Diocesan Convention, and, as needed, quarterly Midlands Convocation meetings and monthly Clericus meetings.
  • Ensure, with the Dean and Canon for Parish Life, appropriate pastoral response for births, deaths, and other milestones, along with providing, alongside other clergy, visits to hospitals, nursing homes and the homebound.
  • Help guide the Community of Hope and, with the Canon for Parish Life, provide leadership for other areas of pastoral ministry, for example: seniors ministry.

 

Skills and Requirements.

  • Theological education (minimum M.Div.)
  • Holy Orders (Priest)
  • At least five years of experience in a parish setting
