Music Staff

Jared Johnson was appointed Canon Organist and Choirmaster of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in 2003. He directs the Cathedral choirs and oversees music for more than 200 liturgies annually. Under his leadership the Cathedral music staff also maintains oversight of liturgy and communications for the Cathedral.  As an organ recitalist he has appeared in major venues throughout North America, Great Britain, Sweden, and Australia. His solo recordings on the Pro Organo and JAV labels have attracted critical praise and have been broadcast nationally on Pipedreams.  Mr. Johnson is a graduate of Oberlin College, where he earned a B.A. in English as well as a B.Mus. in Organ Performance under the tutelage of Haskell Thomson. He earned his M.M., M.M.A. and D.M.A. degrees at Yale University as a pupil of Thomas Murray. In 1997, he was awarded a Watson Fellowship for a year’s study of choral music and conducting in London. His academic honors include Oberlin’s Houston Prize in organ and music theory; Yale’s Sherman prize in organ playing; Porter prize for outstanding achievement; St. Luke’s award for service to the Berkeley chapel; and the ISM faculty prize. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Kappa Lambda.  In Columbia Mr. Johnson chairs the Artistic Committee of the South Carolina Philharmonic, and was co-chair of the South Carolina Mozart Festival in 2006. Prior to his appointment at Trinity Cathedral, Mr. Johnson served on the music staffs of Trinity Church in Boston; the Memorial Church at Harvard; Trinity Church on the Green in New Haven, Connecticut; and the Berkeley Divinity School at Yale.

Christopher Jacobson, Associate Organist & Choirmaster, is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, St. Olaf College, and the American Boychoir School. Before moving to South Carolina in 2009 he was Associate Organist and Associate Director of Music at Washington National Cathedral.

Doak Wolfe is Associate for Music and Communications at Trinity Cathedral. As a member of the music staff for ten years, he assists Canon Johnson in liturgical and musical planning, directing the choirs, and service playing; he is also coordinator of the Cathedral’s weekly concert series Wednesday at Trinity, now in its 32nd season. In 2008 he also became the Cathedral’s director of communications, and he now oversees the Cathedral’s website and the editing and production of all printed materials, including the weekly newsletter and service bulletins. He received a B.A. from the University of the South and a J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law; after practicing law for fifteen years, he joined the Cathedral staff in 1998.  A native of Columbia, he has served as a national officer of the RSCM/America, and as a trustee of the University of the South; he has been active with numerous civic and performing arts organizations over the years.

Elizabeth Hill is the Music Administrator at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, a position she has held since September 2006. She is a graduate of the University of South Carolina, where she received a B.A. in Music, and an M.M. in Voice Performance. While at the university, she was very active in the USC Opera Company.  Her roles included Elvira in L’Italiana in Algeri, Despina in Cosí fan Tutte, Una Conversa/LaSuora Infermiera in Suor Angelica, Lucy in The Telephone and Fanny in The Marriage Contract.  She also appeared in the Newberry Opera production of The Merry Widow.  In the Fall of 2007, she traveled with FBN Opera performing Bach’s Coffee Cantata.  In addition to opera, she joined the Trustus Theatre company for their productions of A…My Name Will Always Be Alice and Bat Boy.  She has also been a featured soloist with the USC Summer Chorus and Graduate Vocal Ensemble. Ms. Hill has been a Cathedral Choir member since 1995; in addition to her administrative duties for the music department, she teaches voice to Cathedral choristers.
