Youth Education Going in a New Direction on Sunday Mornings
- Brian Silldorff, Canon for Youth Ministry
Beginning Sunday, September 13, you will notice a lot of changes in how Trinity offers Youth Education (i.e. Sunday school). Instead of the traditional 6th - 12th grade classes separated by grade that have been offered in the past, students will have a variety of classes that they can choose to attend. The academic year has been divided into four six-week quarters. Each quarter, there will be three class offerings for middle school-aged youth and three class offerings for high school youth. Students can choose to attend whichever class appeals to them each week.
Classes will be offered in a variety of subjects ranging from the Gospels to Media and the Message, a study of modern movies and music. We hope to be able to offer classes on world religions, dating, prayer, stewardship, the history of Trinity, the Episcopal Church, how to choose a vocation, and even sexual purity. There will be twenty-four different classes offered through the year. Our hope is to find passionate, qualified teachers from throughout our parish to lead each of these classes.
There are two significant changes to be aware of. First, Rite 13 will not be offered in the first quarter and, unless there is a request by students and parents, it may not be offered at all. If it is offered, it will be something you will see during quarter three and/or quarter four. The second significant change is in the confirmation class. The class is no longer designed as a tenth grade Sunday school class. It will be offered as a two quarter class taking place during quarters two and three. It will be open to any high school student wanting to take it. We are working out some details about age requirements and teachers, but all of that will be resolved before the class begins in November.
All middle school classes will take place in the soon-to-be renovated (newly painted with TVs and new pictures) classrooms located on the third floor of the Education Building, while high school classes will be offered in the Trinity Center. We ask for your prayers and participation as we venture in this new direction. We are seeking passionate teachers willing to share their knowledge for one of the six-week quarters. If you feel called to lead one of these classes or have an idea about a course that could be offered, please contact me via e-mail at brian@trinitysc.org.
If you have questions about this new format and are interested in teaching or helping facilitate this new program please contact me. There will be an informational meeting about this new format where all of the first quarter classes will be explained on Sunday, September 13, during the education hour. This meeting is designed for all middle school and high school students but is opened to everyone. Thank you for your prayers and continued support of Trinity’s youth.
