MEET: Jessica Umbach, Trinity Communications Director since May, 2019
SPOUSE: Will Umbach, Columbia attorney who grew up at Trinity
CHILDREN: Smith, age 7, who is in second grade; Collins (goes by Coco), age 3, who attends Trinity Learning Center
PETS: Dog, Milly, a 12 year old King Charles Spaniel and Jack Russell Terrier Mix
COLLEGE: College of Charleston
JOB BEFORE TRINITY: Director of Development (Fundraising) at Epworth Children’s Home

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB OUT OF COLLEGE?
Something totally different! I majored in Communications, but right after college, my husband and I got married and moved to Columbia. While I was job hunting and “looking for something else,” I worked at a Veterinary Clinic. It grew into this awesome job and I loved it. My husband and I moved to New York a couple years later, and I worked as a Veterinary Technician there, too. It was a really fun experience with a variety of people: New Yorkers, some famous people… it was great.

WHAT’S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?
Travel. After a trip to NYC this spring, I’ve realized that our children travel well. I’m also a big baseball fan, especially the Red Sox, so traveling to games with my family is definitely on the list. Yes, we are Fireflies fans.

WHAT WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO CHANGE IN THE WORLD?
After working at Epworth Children’s Home, child welfare is one of my biggest callings. People working in that field are doing it because they feel a higher calling. I see that a lot of the rules and regulations in place make it very difficult for them. I would like to see that whole area be revamped and revitalized. (Jessica welcomes help from any interested Trinity members.)

WHAT THREE SONGS ARE ON YOUR PLAYLIST?
I’m a huge Talking Heads fan. My favorite song is “This Must Be The Place”. I love Van Morrison and Fleetwood Mac. Those three artists might make up my whole playlist!

EXTRA CREDIT. WHAT WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO LEARN AND WHY?
I would love to learn Spanish and am working on it now. I was a French minor in college and love foreign languages.

IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN TIME AND TALK TO YOUNG JESSICA, WHAT WOULD YOU TELL HER?
Be present and don’t delay happiness! Sometimes the journey is more important than the destination, so buckle up and enjoy the ride.
